Configuration formats, request shapes, and defaults are still settling. A Labs project can change in a way that needs you to update how you call it, and that can happen in a minor release.

Labs projects are open source and usable, but they are earlier than the rest of the toolkit. Read this before you deploy one.
Outside the support commitments
Labs projects are not covered by the support and SLA terms that apply to the established products. They are supported on a best-effort basis through GitHub issues. If you need one covered under an agreement, talk to us and we will scope it.
Open source on the same terms
Apache License, version 2, self-hosted, and built on the same Phileas engine and policies as everything else. Being early changes the stability promise, not the licensing or the data-sovereignty model.

Can I use a Labs project in production?
Some teams do. The code is open source and runs entirely inside your own environment, so nothing stops you. What you give up is stability: the configuration and request formats can still change, and the project is not covered by the support terms that apply to Philter and the rest of the toolkit. Read the repository issues before you commit to one, and pin a version.
How does a project leave Labs?
By settling down. When the interface has stopped changing, the documentation is complete, and there is enough real-world use to trust the defaults, the project moves into the main toolkit and is supported like everything else there.
Is a Labs project going to be abandoned?
Being in Labs means the project is early, not that it is on the way out. That said, we would rather say plainly that something is experimental than have you discover it after deploying it. If a project is ever retired, the repository stays on GitHub under the same Apache-2.0 license and you can keep running or forking it.
Can you support a Labs project for my team?
Usually, yes. Get in touch with what you are trying to build. Hardening an early project for a specific deployment is a normal consulting engagement, and it is often what moves the project along for everyone else too.
